Could DHEA help your patients with spontaneity?

By Jaclyn Chasse, ND

It has been documented that DHEA can improve egg quality and pregnancy rate in IVF (in-vitro fertilization).  But, it is possible that DHEA could also help your patients conceive on their own?  A new study by Fusi et al shows that it may be possible.  39 women under age 40 and 38 women over age 40 years were given DHEA, 25 mg three times daily for 12 weeks prior to IVF and compared to a control group.  All women in the study had a poor ovarian response and used the DHEA prior to a long IVF protocol.  In both the younger and older women groups, spontaneous pregnancies and live births were significantly higher than in the control group (10 spontaneous pregnancies in the under 40 group, 8 in the over 40 group vs 1 in the control group).  This demonstrates the utility of DHEA in women hoping to achieve pregnancy outside of an IVF protocol.  Spontaneous pregnancies… great!  Now, only if we could help our patients keep their sex lives as spontaneous!
